Hi everybody,
My name is Elene, I live in the Netherlands, I'm 35 yrs, have a daughter,
Marie, 11 and a French fiance, Jean, 35 also.
I had a stroke last october. I wonder how many young people there are on
this list who had a stroke, since it's "not common".
I had the stroke in the left brainside (excuse my English, from time to time
I seem to have lost words as many of you must be able to relate to) so my
right arm and leg were totally paralyzed. The arm retrieved its functions
during my seven week's stay at the hospital and I'm working (sic) on the leg
(esp. the foot) right now. Somehow, it feels like it will all come back in
control. In the beginning, I was so afraid to sleep!
I noticed the effects of the stroke only slowly. I have been hospitalized
the first two weeks of October for a treatment for my bone marrow disease,
(aplastic anemia) and was given Tramal as a painkiller during that stay. One
of the side effects of Tramal is headaches, and I had huge headaches! Never
thought anything of it. I also was administered huge amounts of prednisone.
One of the side effects of prednisone is loss of muscle power. So i didn't
think anything again when walking began to be difficult. So, during a week,
effects began to accumulate and in the end i could not move my arm or my leg
anymore. I called the hospital which was not so easy to do because talking
was complicated. I seemed to loose the words from my mouth. I spent a week
on a bed in the living room with my fiance taking care of me. Washing me,
putting me on the toilets, changing me, everything. Note: we had met only
two months before!
So finally, I called the hospital and they told me to come immediately, I
sais I can't even get out of the house, then they sais, well, call an
ambulance... And so I did. So two guys arrived, hovering me up to the
bed-on-wheels, and they took me to the hospital. Where it took some time to
find out what had happened.
As it seems, I have too much Factor 8 in my blood. That's a coagulation
factorand the counts go UP when a person is under stress. Well, my treatment
(painful, horrrible) for the bone marrow disease was apparantly too much
stress so a little clog messed my brain up.
That's my story - hope it wasn't too long, can't make it shorter!
I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU ARE HERE!
Elene
