Re: Rose Mary?

2007-01-31 18:23:15

Howdy- I've come back up for air! LOL Being a Mommy isn't as easy as I
thought it would be. Jordy is quite colicky and Jenny has had one earache
that required 2 rounds of anti-biotics to clear up. My Mom sprained her
ankle on Labor Say so she hasn't been helping me as much lately so Dad has
been busy with Gramma. Some of my friends did the same thing they did right
after my stroke- they bailed out on promises to help me out. Kate just came
to visit from the 5th through the 12th and she helped me by taking over with
the babies, making dinner etc and letting me sleep. That was a real
treat. She showed me some ways to help Jordy more comfortable so he wouldn't
cry quite so much and everything she said, works so far. I still have to take
him to the pediatrician this week to see if he is lactose intolerant
supervising him on "tummy time and putting a hot water bottle under his
tummy and essence of Peppermint has made a huge difference. Sorry I have
been lax in reading and responding. I'm sure once the kids and I agree on a
more reasonal schedule I'll be around more. Thank you for your concern. Rose
Mary

Hi !

2007-01-31 07:36:55

Hi young strokees!
My name is Donna Campbell. (age nifty 50) I am a 4 year survivor.
My husband, Bill (age 55) is a 5 year survivor. We live in northwest
PA, near Clarion, PA. We have 3 kids and 1 daughter-in-law. Bill Jr.
is 26, his wife, Kristin, is 25. Our daughters Tracy (age 25) and
Suzie (age 18) round out the family. We also have a cat and a house
rabbit.
Bill had his stroke in March of 97. He was not dressed warm enough
outside and his carotoid arteries got brittle. He turned his neck
and tore the right artery. Blood clots formed and one was later
released, hitting the right brain. He is left side affected.
I was trying to do too much, caring for him, trying to run the
household, not getting enough sleep, not checking my blood pressure,
etc. One morning in Jan. of 98 my left side went numb and I had
vertigo. The blood clot hit the back of my brain on the right side.
I never lost movement or strength on my left side but I have half the
feeling and coordination on that side. I am very lucky.
Bill had to retire from teaching accounting at Clarion
University. He tried to keep up with the teaching but found it
physically and mentally too difficult. He retired in Jan. 2000. I
have been a home maker since our son was born.
I am excited to be a member of this group and hope to get to know
all of you.
Donna C.

12 rules to live by...true

2007-01-30 14:41:43

Sometimes we just need to remember what the 12 Rules
of Life really are:
1. Never give yourself a haircut after three
margaritas.
2. You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If
it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves
and shouldn't, use the tape.
3. The five most essential words for a healthy, vital
relationship are "I apologize" and "you are right."
4. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
5. Never pass up an opportunity to pee.
6. If he/she says that you are too good for him/her -
believe them.
7. Learn to pick your battles; ask yourself, "Will
this matter one year from now? How about one month?
One week? One day?"
8. When you make a mistake, make amends immediately.
It's easier to eat crow while it's still warm.
9. If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You
have another chance!
10. Living well really is the best revenge. Being
miserable because of a bad or former relationship just
might mean that the other person was right about you.
11. Work is good, but it's not that important. Money
is nice, but you can't take it with you. Statistics
show most people don't live to spend all they saved;
some die even before they retire. Anything we have
isn't really ours; it was given to us by God; He just
let's us borrow it while we're here...even our kids.
12. And finally...Be really good to your family and/or
friends. You never know when you are going to need
them to empty your bedpan.
Amen!

aching muscles

2007-01-29 21:21:12

I had the nurse at work tell me this one. Take a sock and fill rice in it and
nuke it in microwave. It works good. I used that instead of heating pad last
when I strained back muscle. She also told me take a damp wash cloth in
microwave safe baggie. Heat a min or 2 than wrap towel around it for heating
pad. I had bought the gel kind you microwave and would wear it under my back
suport belt at work. But since I went back to working at pool last December my
back has been pain free. Del

I REALLY ENJOYED CAROL'S THERAPY STORY. HOW I'D LOVE TO BE ABLE TO PICK UP

EASIER TO CRAWL BACKWARD UP MT. EVEREST! THE ONE FUNCTIONAL THING MY HAND CAN DO

John
That's a wonderful story! I think humor and a never surrender attitude are
major factors in recovery. I too was lucky with my therapist. At the end of
every session she'd have me try something she knew I couldn't do. I'd go
home and work on it until I'd be able to show I'd mastered it by next
session. She gave me a quart jar one day. It was filled with pennies,
screws, nuts and bolts of various sizes. I'd dump that on the floor and
pick up with my right hand. Later we added dimes, nickles, grains of rice,
anything we could think of. I'd work that hand daily. Early in therapy she
dropped a pencil on the floor and asked if I could bend over and pick it up.
Should have seen her face when I reached out with my left foot and picked it
up. Always could pick up tiny objects with my feet. Carol

My story

2007-01-27 17:28:21

My Neurologist has said it was a VAD! Quote from the copy he gave me
Fairly extensive subacute, left cerellar hemisphere infarct along with a
small subacute, left posterior cerebral artery territory additionally a
small focus of abnormal signal w/o enhancement in the upper left brain stem.
Because of my age and other tests they believe it was from a VAD.
OK Now my symptoms before the stroke!!!! How long do you have?
I had a fall on crutches 11-96 and came down hard in a sitting position on a
hope chest and within a week started having some really STRANGE symptoms
such as headaches (when I was previously headache free) I went to 12
different doctors and the ER over the next couple of years. Other symptoms
were very itchy scalp thus the need for the dermatologist Also were the eye
doctor, dentist, thinking it might be TMJ, Chiropractor (who actually helped
in my case), OB/GYN, thinking it might be menopausal symptoms. The others
were Family Physicians. I had some really weird symptoms and if you would
like to hear more I will tell you. The day I had the stroke I got really
dizzy and sat down on the couch, I could only remember 2 #'s. So I called
my hubby and my son's school where a friend was at volunteering. They both
came and my husband took me to my doctor who FIT me in her schedule. She
said I was having an "occular migraine" and sent me home. Keep in mind
this was like noon when this started so I went home and slept that night and
the next morning woke up throwing up without even getting out of bed! So
hubby called the ambulance and they took me to the ER and they said I was
having an "inner ear infection", by that time my husband said NO it's more
than that you need to run an MRI so they did and found it at like 1 o'clock
the next afternoon. I forgot to mention my doctor for those 5 years kept
diagnosing me as obsessive compulsive disorder and here take an anti-
depressant. So needless to say I don't go to that doc anymore. Whew!
There is my story in short! I was in ICU for 10 days because I quit
breathing and then had to have a shunt put in! Total I was in hospital and
in patient- rehab 1 day short of a month!
I feel like when I post this EVERYONE IS GOING TO KNOW ME NOW! Oh well I
guess I will have MANY great new friends.
SO HERE GOES..............Your new friend, Cindy

Enron? how bout World Comm too. This year has been the worst for
people like Henning, Carol and I. Gives us a bad name and we never
even did anything wrong :( Boy, wish I would have known you before
my stroke Carol, though then again my CO cooked the books on
purpose. It was an ESOP CO so any workers with 401k's and CO stock
got screwed royally! No pensions nothing! They went out of business
right after I left. Sadly if I wouldn't of had my stroke, myself and
another gal in accounting had enough evidence on them to expose the
current sucky management and let it be known company wide what they
had been up too for a long while...gee what could have been :( Some
things will never be known.

You know the old saying "you can catch more flys with honey than
vinegar?" With Social Security you really do have to be nice, if
you're shitty to them whoever you're on the phone with will not get
your stuff fixed on purpose...really .With them it pays to be nice
and do your paperwork like they ask even if it says voluntary on it.
Sad I know...but true.

2007-01-23 03:40:29

Well...found out today what the problem finally was. Those idiots
didn't change my last married name to my new one when I got married
last time and the bank wouldn't accept the payment in this name!
WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also found out today too that if
you EVER have a problem resolving anything at all with SS, call your
local office. The operators at the 800 # are alloted 2 minutes tops
to resolve someone's problem and get them off the phone. A lady from
my local office informed my Husband this morning of this fact.
General questions are ok to call 800 # with just not anykind of
problems.
Tiger? This sounds like a total crock of crap they're telling you.
Look in your yellow pages for an attorney that handles Social
Security law. Call the office, you'll get a free consultation and
they won't collect unless you do, so no money up front. Don't settle
for whatever shit they are trying to feed you. Good luck and keep us
informed ;) Kristi

PFO surgery

2007-01-20 17:44:37

Hello folks --
All seems to have gone well for my PFO (hole-in-the-heart) surgery at
UC San Franciso. Because I was aerobically fit (perhaps I can also
thank genetics), my veins were "fire hoses" and the surgical team was
able to do the catheter-based surgery in record time -- about 1/2 the
average time. So, the hole in my heart is now plugged, and we will
have to see what the next 6 months allows, but the outlook is
generally positive.
My interest in fluid flow, along with my background in X-Ray and
radioanalytical chemistry, allowed me to interpret the images on the
monitors -- in fact I drove the techs and MDs crazy with my qestions.
I took about 1/4 the normal amount of sedative, so I could be awake
and wouldn't miss a thing. There were some surprises (to me and the
surgeons), and it seems that the hole, while relatively small, was a
direct conduit, which might easily allow clots to pass from the safe
right side of my heart, to the left side and eventually to my brain.
We took some pics while in Frisco:
Here we are looking east on Haight Street, from the historic Golden
Gate Park. That is, we are looking toward the area where Janis
Joplin, Gracie Slick, and Jerry Garcia once lived.
http://users.viawest.net/~hwstock/UCSF/ucsf_01.jpg
and to the right is the unhistoric McDonald's, which I find very
ironic (the bus heading toward us is the Haight Street Trolley, but
the resolution of this image isn't sufficient to see the lettering).
And here's where I had the surgery:
http://users.viawest.net/~hwstock/UCSF/ucsf_02.jpg
Whoops! Well, maybe we'll see the correct place latter on. Remember,
I've had a stroke and I'm easily confused.
Here's my wife Christine standing by the entrance to Golden Gate Park:
http://users.viawest.net/~hwstock/UCSF/ucsf_03.jpg
OK, here's a telephoto view of where I REALLY had the surgery (I was
on the 13th floor catheter lab, Friday the 13th):
http://users.viawest.net/~hwstock/UCSF/ucsf_04.jpg
The guy in the foreground offered to bless us.
Here's Christine walking west along Golden Gate Park, right after
witnessing what appeared to be a drug deal. Earlier, a guy who
looked like our friend Cliff walked toward us, and as Christine was
about to say, "Hi Cliff!" the guy reached into a trashcan and started
drinking from a discarded McDonald's container. Actually, unlike
Cliff, he had shoes that matched.
http://users.viawest.net/~hwstock/UCSF/ucsf_05.jpg
Finally, here's our Hotel (the Stanyan Park), right across from the
park, and very near Haight Street. As you can see, it was a very
convenient to many services.

I agree with you, I'm very lucky to be alive. I had a 1 out of 10 chance to
survive my surgery. Of the things I can't do now, I'm bumbed that I can never
donate blood. I even tried to sign up to be a bone marrow doner. It costs $50.00
for the testing for that. I got my hotel I work at to give me a check. Went in
and was turned down. They tried to give me the check back I said no call next
person on list and let's pray they're a match for someone. I walked out of there
crying. That was 11 years ago.I still have my ups and downs, feels like more
downs at times. I am a better person inside now than I was before. I CARE ABOUT
PEOPLE ALL PEOPLE. Del

Re: ANGER/LABILITY/CAROL

2007-01-15 21:48:19

Hi Carol,
You describe it spot-on - lability!
When I had my stroke I was aphasic and, although I could distinguish my (ex)
wife, father and friends nobody told me I had had a stroke!
Through doctors I heard that I had a stroke (the doctors gave me no chance
to survive) - did all the "tests" and sent me home to die!
That forced me to get better (with God guiding me).
I am still here, still improving and I am in control of my emotions!
You are surely a survivor! Congratulations on your one year "anniversary" -
mine will be in October - fifteen years! (I was 38 when I stroked).
Keep well and say hi to Spud! Henning

Sheri & Carol

2007-01-15 11:13:21

dear Sheri& carol;
I also have had trouble with anger and frustration but
every morning when I wake up and recognize the guy's
face in the mirror I try to thank GOD for another day
to go out and make the most of it(it could be worse
ie. not being able to get up at all);keep the
faith and attitudes do get better.
A friend goes there ,and occaissionly still does.

book work

2007-01-15 01:56:04

I quit all antidepressants about a year ago. My doctor and I felt I no
longer needed them so we kept cutting the dosage until I quit them entirely.
There was definitely a time I needed them but was glad to not take them
anymore. It felt like a victory. But I was so resistant to taking them at
first, but I did need them. They just took the edge off so I could cope.
Now I keep myself very busy and I think that's a large part of the healing
process. I feel very useful again. Sometimes, like this week, I find I've
overtired myself and have to pull back for a few days but doesn't take more
than 3 days and I'm ready to hit it again. My niece just dropped off the
2002 books for the bakery so will hit them hard starting tomorrow. I've
been able to save them thousands of $ as they had a very incompetent
bookkeeper. I've redone the books back to 99 and it has made a huge
difference. I'll always be grateful to them for entrusting this to me. I'd
submitted 2 years of books to the accountant and she'd emailed me, saying
the changes were amazing and I did the cleanest, most organized books she'd
ever seen. Then something came up that we both needed to work on so we met
at the bakery. The look on her face when she met me was priceless! She now
sends clients to me who have a mess of their books. She calls me the
trouble shooter. Also, to give me an edge I'll barter bookkeeping rather
than charge and many places really like that. I have farm clients and will
do their books in exchange for potatoes, produce, meat, chicken, etc. Saves
us both money and I love it. Carol

I don't know if any of you guy's saw Pres. Bush's speech to the UN
yesterday but the attrocities that hussein is responsible for since
the early nineties is just sick and disgusting! Then last night on
Primetime they were interviewing his long time mistress who is now in
hiding. This man is just evil...hitler move over. Can't believe
Bush even has to ask permission over going to war with him because
they have more than enough evidence to support the fact that he has
been developing biological and nuclear warfare for some time now. If
this isn't acted on you think September 11th was bad? It will pale
in comparison to the possible mushroom cloud there is going to be.
He is a REAL threat to not just us but to the rest of the world to.
Sorry if this is off topic but just had to say something about this.

have such a change that we go through and not be angry. I use to be on Zoloft
but now on Celexa...I have had to 40mgs from 10mgs. Still I get angry...I think
alot of this feeling is from frustration and lack of understanding. WE DO NOT
want pity or anyone feel sorry for us BUT UNDERSTAND our changes. ALSO we are
the same people INSIDE but may look a little different sometimes we don't look
different so these folks expect alot more than we can give....LOOK at what SSI

Does anyone else here get frustrated and angry very easy? It's seams
my fuse keeps geting shorter and shorter. I'm not taking any meds
now. My doctor put me on prozac about 2 years ago. I also suffer from
depression. I had to stop taking the prozac after taking it about 2
or 3 months. It helped at first than I got to point that I wouldn't
take crap from anyone. Not good at all. I'm wondering if anyone has
this same problem. I get to point that at times I hate myself. One
thing is for sure I would never hurt anyone or myself. Just fell like
crawling under a rock and hide from the world. I've been dealing with
depression since after my surgery/stroke. It's just so frustating
that I will be feeling good than all at once I get so mad/frustated.
I know one thing for sure if it wasn't for my kids I would have given

part of my scull for the surgery. I remember geting a hair cut a long

Just want to say hi Cindy and testing 123

My thoughts...........

2007-01-08 13:52:39

I thought it would be appropriate to send a little greeting to you all this
morning wishing you a safe and wonderful day.
I *know* this list is supposed to stay on topic but I feel today, of all
days, is a good one to share some thoughts and feelings on what this day
means to you and me. Please feel free to share your thoughts and feelings
about this tragic anniversary, your family, what has changed about you in the
past year or anything else that pops into your mind. I for one would love to
hear it.
I know for me, I appreciate my family more, my friends more and I look
forward to life a little bit more. This past year has been a hard one. I
have lost some good friends to cancer, drug overdose and alcoholism. I have
learned that my only sister has incurable/untreatable melanoma that has
spread to her brain. Her future is certainly going to be short and there is
nothing anyone can do for her. It is just a matter of time. I pray I can
see her again before the end and before she doesn't remember me. She has
already lost our childhood and her shortterm memory. Her death will
devestate me. My father is getting a divorce after 18 years of marriage and
my mother and her boyfriend of 16 years are splitting up. It has been a
rough year but I must say I still feel ok about it. I can't change what has
happened, I can't change what will happen and I am learning not to carry the
weight of the world on my shoulders (my hips do enough of that).
In the past year we have been told my son will need to have part of his brain
removed and that he is moderately mentally retarded. But as I sit here I
can't help but chuckle at that. His last EEG was normal, his meds are
working with minimal side effects. He also is now going pee and last night
he went poop on the toilet! He may be challenged but he still can be very
intelligent and bright. His sense of humor is amazing. His smile can melt
your heart.
In the past year my daughter has had two surgeries for tubes in her ears and
to have enlarged tonsils removed. She has grown like a weed, surpassed her
brother in speech, and she is now starting potty training (only to imitate
her big brother). She has a smile that reminds me of my sister so much it is
scary and I know Shae will live in on Hannah in looks and mannerisms. Shae
can never truly be gone from us as long as Hannah keeps smiling.
When I think of all of those women whose husband's didn't come home one year
ago and I will thank God that mine does. I can't imagine a life without
Jeff. He is truly my soul mate and he anchor. He can make me smile in the
worst of times and he can read me like a book. He always knows when
something is bothering me and he is usually able to drag it out of me and
make me feel better. He is my true love.
Lastly, I am thankful for you guys and my IRL friends. Without friends a
person is just a shell. All of you guys are so appreciated and cared about.
If I am ever having a bad day I can express it to you and you always make me
feel better. Between PSN and all of my other groups I don't think I would be
able to cut it as a special needs mother. You give me courage, information
and strength.
I love you all!

Very sorry...

Toy Run

2007-01-06 11:48:31

Had another meeting to organize our toy run. It went pretty well but then a few
started in about they can't do the whole five miles so we should only go a mile,
etc. etc. Were very angry when I told them you choose and go the distance you
feel you can do. I plan to finish the route. Don't know why people feel
because they only want to go so far, everyone should stop there. This lady said
if the group doesn't stop where she wants to stop, she's not going. Her choice.
We're putting on our posters join anywhere on the route you'd like, stop when
you feel you must. People suggested the whiner join for the last mile but she
said no as she feels her best chance to get her picture in the paper is early in
the route. That bothered me. I think people should put aside personal agendas.
I've set up that we buy our toys from a store here that runs by donations, sells
toys and 100% of the money they make goes to feed the homeless. So we donate by
buying toys there, which at the end of the run, are donated to the Salvation
Army, who distribute them to needy kids at Christmas. What we want to show is
disabled people as part of the community and giving back. That's the real
agenda, not getting your picture in the paper.
By the way, Spud is going in his Harley Davidson leathers and Mary is making a
little saddle for him as he's carrying a pig called a Harley Davidson Hawg.
Carrying it in his mouth for five miles is a bit too much to ask of him. Carol

Gawd, what a day! I really thought I was almost healed from that
fateful day but I am indeed not. Watching the Today show coverage
this morning. I busted out bawling trying to contain my emotions. I
am in Michigan and pretty far removed from it, I didn't know of
anyone there at all but it hit very close to home for me. I must
have seriously been in shock and disbelief for awhile.
Thank you for your kind words coming from South Africa Henning :) I
wholeheatedly appreciate your sentiment. GOD BLESS
AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stroke Advocacy Association

2007-01-04 14:01:36

Hello again
I'm planning on providing a site domain host. However are there any
web designers or programmers out there that would be interested in
donating their services? The company I checked with wants 3350 to do
and until donations start rolling in can't afford them fees :(

Service dogs are absolutely wonderful! Wish more people would realize the
difference they would make in their lives. You can train your own dog, so
don't have the huge wait. Spud's not only a great help to me but he's 24
hour a day loving companionship. Carol

RE: BOOK

2007-01-04 00:26:35

I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THE SAME KIND OF THING. NOT THE SURVIVAL GUIDE I KNOW
OF BUT NOTICED CERTIAN CONCERNS THAT PEOPLE TALK ABOUT, NOT EVEN REALLY RELIZING
IT. I WAS THERE IT'S LIKE I CAN TELL THEY ARE STILL IN THIER FIRST OR SECOND
YEAR. WELL I MADE IT FIVE AND THERE IS DIFFERENT STAGES OF CONCERNS AND LIFE
EXPERIENCES WE MUST GO THOUGH. BUT THE FIRST YEAR ESPECIALLY, THERE ARE SOME
TOUGH ISSUES WE ALL FACE. LIKE HAVING TO LET SOMEONE ELSE DO EVERYTHING FOR YOU,
GETTING BACK IN THE PUBLIC EYE, RELEARNING EVERYTHING WE ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO,
DOING WITHOUT THE THINGS WE WOULD LIKE TO DO, ECT. AND WE MUST ALL STRUGGLE TO
FIND OUR WAY. BUT STRUGGLING I THINK IS PART OF THE THERAPY TO OUR RECOVERY.
ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS? OR CONCERNS YOU MAY BE DEALING WITH?

Re: Help neededvocational rehab

2007-01-03 21:19:37

from my experience with vocational rehab they help you retain find or return
to a job after injury by providing assessment services to determine
vocational potential limitations that sort of thing also they can help buy
equipment to accommodate the job task. but they will only buy devices
pertaining to employment so it had to be necessary to have it to work so they
won't necessarily put a whirlpool in your bathroom. but they have funded
computer equipment and class tuition. each state runs their program
differently you do have to qualify. give them a call or have your doctor
refer youto the regional office. I've learned if you don't get quick
response call the supervisor anfd keep going up until you get the help or
answers you need.

You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music
won't last. When you run so fast to get some where you miss half the
fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day it is
like an unopened gift....thrown away...life is not a race. Take it
slower. Hear the music before the song is over.

Paws with a cause

2007-01-02 04:24:24

Today at pool I met a guy.He is a survivor of a TBI. He was in bad
wreck broke his neck. He has been staying at training center for
disabled Olympics. He is in archery. I saw him with his helper.
Showed him where to get down to pool in his wheelchair. Than I got a
small kids bucket with water for Joe his helper. He gave me a leaflet
on "Paws with a cause"Told me Joe is 8 years old and has been with
him for 6 years. He asked me where he can take Joe to do his
business. I said any where on grass and told him let me know and I'd
clean up afterwards. LOL That's a first for me offering to clean dog
poop up. Later on he came out and came over to gazebo and asked if I
had a wet towel, he cleaned up after and guess got some on his hand.
He asked me for direction to Hard Rock Cafe not far from hotel. I
took him and when we got inside he stoped and said hold on let door
shut. We went through doors with button to open them. Than he
said "Joe door button" and Joe pushed button to open door. He asked
when pool opens in morning cause he wanted to go for swim before he
flys back to Mich. I told him 6:30am but I'm there at 6am. He was
happy cause he has early flight and now will be able to swim before
he leaves. Here is there web site. I haven't been to it yet.
